Matter Rap -Trial 2

This video should have the sound. I had to shorten it some to make the file smaller.

Matter Rap

The students did a fabulous job singing their Matter "RAP"!!

Here is a cute video of them from the classroom.

Better Late than Never!

Here are some pictures from Grandparents day! The kids really enjoyed having them here!

Upming tests

Dear Parents,
The students have been working really hard these past couple of weeks in math and science. We are quickly approaching our first Common District Assessment (CDA) for the Matter unit and the Place Value unit.  Below are the standards for math that will be evaluated on the CDA.

STANDARDS FOR MATHEMATICAL CONTENT
Understand Place Value
MCC2.NBT.1  - Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones; e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones.  a. 100 can be thought of as a bundle of ten tens — called a ―hundred. b. The numbers 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900 refer to one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine hundreds (and 0 tens and 0 ones).
MCC2.NBT.2- Count within 1000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s.
MCC2.NBT.3 - Read and write numbers to 1000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form.
MCC2.NBT.4- Compare two three-digit numbers based on meanings of the hundreds, tens, and ones digits, using  >,  =, and  < symbols to record the results of comparisons.
Below is a link to a very helpful website that can help you and your child review for the CDA. We have started to use it some in class so your child should be a little familiar with it. This website lists every standard that will be taught this year in second grade. To study for this CDA all you need to do is to scroll down until you find the place value section. There are numerous activities that under place value for your child to study.
This is a free website for a few exercise and then it will ask you to sign up for a membership. If this happens you can simply log off and then log back on and continue as normal, or if you wish you can subscribe to this website for the extra practice at home.

I have yet to find a website for science that is available for home use. For the science CDA your student should be able to tell you the 3 states of matter, how these states change and properties of each state. I am working on uploading pictures of our latest experiments to the blog, so keep checking. Also, at the bottom of the blog page you can find links to all of the websites that I use in class with the students.
I hope everyone has  a  great weekend,

Oobleck

Today we did a science experiment trying to decide if Oobleck is a solid or a liquid. At times it was a solid but it also had characteristics of a liquid. Hmmm....I'll let the students decide!

To make Oobleck mix 1/4 cup of cornstarch and 1/3 cup of water. It should have the consistency of a thick soup when you are done. To make it thicker like a solid add more cornstarch, to make it thinner like a liquid add more water.
