We are slowly finishing up our unit on measurement. we will have a CDA on day towards the end of next week. Below are the standards that we have been working along with some fun websites to help the students review. You can find the websites on my blog and my webpage also. The children have done really well with this unit and have had a lot of fun with all the different activities. Please let me know if there is anything else that I can do to help!

Upcoming units and Information
Dear Parents,
Today I have sent home in the front pocket of your child's agenda a list of supplies that we will need in order to complete some Valentine science experiments on the half day February 11. If you are able to donate the highlighted item great, if not it's ok. We will have a Valentine exchange, but not a party on the half day also. I will send home a list next week of everyone in the class. We do have 20 students in case you want to buy your stuff early.
We are in the beginning week of our new math unit on measurement. So far the students have done really well, they are able to tell the difference between the metric system and the standard system. Below are all the standards that we will be working on in the weeks to come. I can give you a warning that when we get to telling time children struggle with this the most, so it would be a good idea to start looking at this now.
STANDARDS FOR MATHEMATICAL CONTENT
Measure and estimate lengths in standard units.
MCC2.MD.1 Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
MCC.2.MD.2 Measure the length of an object twice, using length units of different lengths for the two measurements; describe how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen.
MCC2.MD.3 Estimate lengths using units of inches, feet, centimeters, and meters.
MCC.2.MD.4 Measure to determine how much longer one object is than another, expressing the length difference in terms of a standard length unit.
Relate addition and subtraction to length.
MCC2.MD.5 Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve word problems involving lengths that are given in the same units, e.g., by using drawings (such as drawings of rulers) and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
MCC.2.MD.6 Represent whole numbers as lengths from 0 on a number line diagram with equally spaced points corresponding to the numbers 0, 1, 2, ..., and represent whole-number sums and differences within 100 on a number line diagram.
Work with time and money.
MCC.2.MD.7 Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m.
Represent and Interpret Data.
MCC2.MD.9 Generate measurement data by measuring lengths of several objects to the nearest whole unit, or by making repeated measurements of the same object. Show the measurements by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in whole-number units.
MCC2.MD.10 Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single- unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems[1] using information presented in a bar graph.

Math CDA this Friday 12/12!!!
We will be having a math CDA this Friday over the following concepts....
Please take a few minutes every day to review with your child.
Add and subtract within 20.
MCC.2.OA.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract.
MCC.2.NBT.5 Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Below are some new links that can help you with these various concepts. Please take time to review these concepts. The children are doing very well with addition but are still have trouble with subtraction that requires regrouping. They are able to perform the operation but unable to recognize when to do it in a word problem.
