Fossil Vocabulary

1.      Fossil- the hardened remains of a plant or animal.
2.     Extinct- a once living thing that is no longer found on the Earth.
3.     Mold fossil- a fossil that is in the shape of a living thing left in sediment.
4.     Cast Fossil- a fossil that is formed when a mold is filled in by mud or minerals.
5.     Amber fossil- Tree sap that has become a hard yellow translucent fossil.
6.     Petrified wood-a fossil of a tree whose parts are replaced by minerals.
7.     Imprint fossil- A fossil consisting of an imprint of or a mark left by an organism, such as a footprint.
8.     Plant fossils- The evidence in rock of the presence of a plant
9.     Remains- the parts left over after other parts have been removed, used, or destroyed.
